Add family members to USAA Car Insurance

USAA was founded by Army officers over 100 years ago. It offers outstanding customer service and affordable rates today, but who is eligible for its coverage?

USAA memberships are open to all active military personnel, honorably discharged vets and their immediate family members – spouses, children, parents, and siblings. However, grandparents, aunts and uncles and grandparents do not qualify.

Spouse

It may be beneficial to add your spouse as a driver on your auto insurance policy if you have recently been married. This could result in lower rates, especially if you and your spouse have good driving records. Bundling may also be available. It is also a great way to do financial housekeeping while ensuring that the coverage matches new circumstances. Co-owners or listed drivers have complete control over the policy. They can make changes or claim without any penalty, while listed motorists receive coverage and do not have to file a claim or request alterations.

USAA offers more than just car and home insurance. It also provides banking, investment and insurance products that are tailored to active-duty service members and their families. They consistently score highly in customer satisfaction surveys and are recognized by JD Power as the top car insurance.

The eligibility for USAA membership is based on military service, having a parent/spouse that was a member of the military or veterans, as well as pre-commissioned officers contracted to serve following graduation from military academies. Some services may require additional documentation or verification during the application process.

Children

USAA offers a wide range of financial products, including insurance, banking, and investments, to veterans, military personnel, and their families, at very competitive rates and with an excellent level of customer service. USAA is proud of its low prices and exceptional service.

USAA auto insurance is only available to active duty military personnel, veterans who have been honorably discharged and their spouses. Children under 18 can become USAA members. This includes grandchildren of USAA members.

For example, a child can qualify for USAA membership when his or her parent is an active duty military or National Guard/Reserves officer/enlisted personnel or if the child is enrolled in a program to become an officer. This child must have also been a legal dependent of the parent/stepparent for at least 5 years.

Both parents or stepparents must provide proof of service in the military, as well as their current rank or job. Proof can be provided by military records, copies of USAA’s insurance policy, or any other documents required by the insurance company. All documentation must be provided before adding the child to an insurance policy.

Parents

As long as the policyholder permits, parents can stay on their child’s insurance policy. After an 18-year old driver turns 16, they will either have to be excluded or purchase their own policy. If a child has been excluded from coverage, then any accidents that they cause will not be covered.

USAA’s auto and property insurance is designed for active duty service members, their immediate families (spouses and children, or stepchildren), or veterans who attended military academies and ROTC programs in military colleges. Immediate family includes spouses and children, or stepchildren, of these servicemembers and veterans. Non-immediate includes officer candidates undergoing a commissioning program at these academies/ROTCs/military college, but do not directly belong to the immediate family.

USAA is a company owned by its members, which means that all members are entitled to equal voting rights and receive yearly distributions from the surplus premiums collected. USAA boasts some of the best customer satisfaction ratings in its industry and provides services including insurance, banking, investment planning services and loan products that members can access online via smartphone/tablet apps, telephone/mail/branch location.

Nephews/Nieces

USAA membership is open to family members of active duty military personnel. The list of eligible individuals includes active, retired or honorably separated U.S. military personnel; cadets at service academies and midshipmen; and pre-commissioned officers in commissioning programs. Furthermore, USAA accepts children (including step-children), spouses/widows/widowers of USAA members as potential new members.

The eligibility of a member does not transfer to the parents, nor can any other family members join. The legal guardianship of USAA members’ nieces and nephews could make them eligible to join.

USAA requires proof of eligibility from individuals seeking membership, whether active-duty military personnel or veterans are needed or their children/grandchildren need access. USAA may also ask for permission to conduct credit checks or background checks during the application process.

USAA will then add the new insured to your policy at the same price as the original insured. USAA offers multiple vehicle insurance under a single policy, reducing the total cost of ownership. Depending on the car covered, there may also be additional benefits such as discounts for safe driving or lower premiums if anti-theft devices are installed.
